I think Ensiferum is the closest my 1996 self will get to experiencing a metal show in the 80’s. Swap out today’s metalcore vaping for tons of tobacco and cigarettes (even some cigars). Take out the overly-self serious, aesthetic obsessed state metal has been in for the last few years and insert some guys incredibly talented and serious about their craft having fun making viking metal! More accurately they play Finnish Folk Metal, telling stories about all kinds of Nordic legends and myths. It was such a fun and refreshing experience, I immediately saved a few songs and would love to catch them again next time they come to Florida! And in their wise words: RUM! WOMEN! VICTORY!

In another rare, but greatly appreciated double feature, I was able to catch the incredibly talented MONO as well as Kaelan Mikla. I always buy merch from the bands when I come to shows, and for both acts I opted for vinyl records. They both create incredibly atmospheric music, albeit with different energies, that I just had to hear crackle on my turntable.

Scott and the boys in Alpha Wolf truly know how to put on a party. During the show, they mentioned how much they connected with their US audience, particularly Florida, and I’ve got to say the feeling is most certainly mutual. With a sold out show at The Orpheum and absolutely killer opening bands, this show was always a recipe for an amazing night. If you’re even a remote metal fan, this is a rare band you have to try and catch in Florida, because the chemistry with the local scene was palpable. And to the fan that passed out during an opening band, and was later revived and found crowd-surfing for Alpha Wolf? You’re a legend, mate.
