Saxon

Being born in the late 90s, I admittedly was not familiar with Saxon, but when I see we’re working with a metal band, I sign up no questions asked. I went in absolutely blind, what I saw before me shattered my metal core-millennial-mind. Before me were tons of Gen-X and Boomers enjoying metal? What reality had I stepped into that my seniors were metalheads? But before me, with canes, prescription glasses and beers in hand, were the men and women that built the foundation for the metal scene that I enjoy on a regular basis today. And leading them from the front, like a cacophonous choir, was Saxon, and they rocked. Gone were my assumptions that Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath stood alone in 70’s. Gone were my assumptions that those in retirement couldn’t rock out. Dad Rock is extremely popular with my generation right now, but I think it’s high time we turned things up to 11.

Move over Dad Rock, it’s time for Dad Metal to shine.

Honne @ The Plaza Live

I’ve seen many shows at the Plaza Live in Orlando, most of which usually end with being herded against extremely sweaty, exhausted, fans that you’d probably rather not breathe on you. Described as a synth-pop and contemporary R&B duo, Honne makes incredibly full-bodied music that is extremely pleasant to listen to.

That said, I did not see how this excellent studying/late night car ride soundtrack was going to mix with something like a live performance. I’m pleased to say Honne’s live performance was probably the most enjoyable, intimate show I’ve ever seen live. The show had an overarching theme of having fun that felt less self-destructive as many other artists and more self-fulfilling and introspective. This culture came to a head when the guys actually got every individual (and I do mean every single one) in the audience to form lines of hugs and friendly embraces. It was definitely the first time I was genuinely happy to be connected, shoulder to shoulder, with all those sweaty, exhausted fans and I would gladly see them again.

Devin Townsend Project

Last evening, Jackie and I had the opportunity to meet our client Devin Townsend. He performed at The Plaza – a favorite Orlando venue I’ve talked about before. A few days ago, Devin had a bit of an accident and sprained his ankle. Backstage before the show, he was on crutches and could not walk. His ankle was the size of a grapefruit and had colors that a calligrapher would be proud of. On stage, he killed the packed house and no one knew – unless they had followed his Facebook page – which has some funny comments.

Professionals like Devin know how to give the audience an incredible show – and his fans loved it. When he hit the stage, the rush of the fans must have made his pain disappear.

Tegan and Sara Visit Orlando!

Last night, Jackie and I had a rare opportunity to see one of our clients perform.  The iconic Plaza Theater was packed, and the crowd was amazing.  Before the show, we talked with both Tegan and Sara backstage and got a little “Closer”
